Something amazing happened this week. No it’s not the 3 days in a row that our daughter sleeping through the night (12 whole hours!!!) although that seems almost miraculous. It’s a fantastic and eagerly awaited piece mail. A card that reads “Welcome To The PJ Library”.
The PJ Library is a program that sends FREE Jewish books and music to Jewish families with young children. Inspired by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, the PJ library was the idea of Harold Grinspoon who worked with other philanthropists and the Federation system to bring the PJ library to communities across North America.
Now our daughter has plenty of books. More books than bookshelves. And we are blessed to live in a town with a great public library, one that also has some Jewish themed books and Hebrew cd’s available to borrow. So why is it so exciting to me that she will have more?
It’s not the sheer volume of books that she will be getting, although between the ages of 6 months and 4 years she will amass an impressive collection. Really it’s the idea that every month she will get a package that says Judaism is a gift and it’s for you. As a mother and a rabbi, it’s a gift I want her to accept. I’m thrilled that PJ Library gives her one more way to learn about and celebrate being Jewish. While I expect she may find the box more entertaining than the books at the beginning, I’m looking forward to sharing my love of reading and Judaism with my daughter. So I can’t wait until next month when I can bring in her first PJ Library gift and tell her “you’ve got mail!”.
